A CONVEYOR BELT needs competent inspection throughout its service life:
We provide nondestructive testing (NDT) that accurately depicts cord defects, including those missed by visual inspection. Portable instrumentation "scans" the belt along its entire length at normal operating speed. The inspection identifies:
|
LOSS OF STRENGTH, based on steel cord structural integrity, can be estimated within ± 3.0% of the original strength of the conveyor belt.
A SKILLED TECHNICIAN will place the instrument on the belt. While the belt runs past the instrument, the steel cords are magnetically saturated. Defects or changes in the individual cord structure cause flux leakage in the magnetic field that are picked up by Hall Effect sensors. After further processing, metallic area and local fault information is recorded on a strip chart and magnetic tape. The technician will give you "on-the-spot" results and leave a FIELD REPORT for your immediate use. DETAILED, FORMAL COMPUTERIZED REPORTS are sent within 14 days. Comparisons are made with past test results when available, and "belt life" is extrapolated into the future. This extrapolation helps you in scheduling belt changes or repairs and helps take the "guesswork" out of your belt budgeting program. ALL BELTS wear out eventually, gradually losing work capability throughout its service life, making periodic NDT inspections helpful. Defects and damage turned up in an NDT inspection can help pinpoint the factors leading to an eventual belt failure. Most belts have to be retired or repaired due to damage from outside sources. NDT inspection can help to diagnose these conditions, therefore helping to extend the life of your investment. We can communicate with your belt repair company by providing structural information and accurate locations of damage along the belt length and width. |
